Semiconductor sell-off weighs on US futures as Brent slips under $85

Nasdaq-100 futures fell 0.9% and Micron dropped 4.5% in pre-market trading, while Brent crude dipped below $85 a barrel and WTI fell under $80.

US stock futures signaled a weaker open on Tuesday, 28 July, as global semiconductor shares came under renewed selling pressure tied to investor concerns about the returns from large artificial intelligence spending. LiveMint Markets said sentiment also remained cautious ahead of a busy week of central bank decisions.

According to LiveMint Markets, Nasdaq-100 futures fell 0.9% and S&P 500 futures slipped 0.1%, while Dow Jones Industrial Average futures rose 123 points, or 0.2%. Micron Technology fell 4.5% in pre-market trading, with Marvell Technology and Advanced Micro Devices down about 3% each.

The semiconductor weakness followed a steep move in South Korea, where SK Hynix slid 10% after its American depositary receipts fell to a record low in New York and below their initial US listing price in Monday trading. LiveMint Markets added that Samsung Electronics fell 9.15%, with the drop linked to worries about circular funding practices and intensifying competition from Chinese chipmakers.

In commodities, LiveMint Markets reported that crude prices stayed under pressure, with Brent crude futures slipping below $85 per barrel for the lowest level in more than a week, and WTI futures falling below $80 per barrel. The broader backdrop included expectations for central banks, with the Federal Reserve widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged, and geopolitical tensions easing after the US paused its daily strikes on Iran.
