Former CFPB official Christopher Peterson tapped as acting NJ consumer chief
Peterson starts Aug. 3 as acting director, after serving on CFPB enforcement policy and strategy and helping develop the Military Lending Act.
HousingWire reports that Gov. Mikie Sherrill will nominate Christopher L. Peterson to lead New Jersey’s Division of Consumer Affairs.
Peterson, a former CFPB senior adviser, is set to begin serving as acting director on Aug. 3, pending formal nomination, advice, and consent by the state Senate. The appointment is described as reflecting an ongoing shift toward state oversight of lending and other consumer finance practices as federal enforcement priorities evolve.
According to the Attorney General Jennifer Davenport’s office, Peterson’s background in consumer credit oversight points to continued attention to lending and servicing practices. The announcement also says Peterson helped develop the Military Lending Act, which restricts abusive lending to service members and their families.
The Division of Consumer Affairs is New Jersey’s primary civil consumer protection agency, enforcing state consumer fraud laws, regulating the securities industry, and overseeing 51 professional boards. Jeremy E. Hollander has served as acting director since January 2026, following the departure of Elizabeth M. Harris, and will return to his role as deputy director of the division’s Office of Consumer Protection.
