Hong Kong tourism secretary urges residents to cycle 1.2 million km
The challenge is timed around Hong Kong’s 30th anniversary of returning to China next year.
Hong Kong’s Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui urged residents to take part in a cycling push during this month’s Ride to Shine Hong Kong event, setting a goal of more than 1.2 million km, which she described as roughly equivalent to circling the Earth 30 times.
According to SCMP Economy, the effort is intended to help commemorate Hong Kong’s 30th anniversary of returning to China next year, with Law arguing that cycling should be developed beyond a short-term trend.
The article says the city is still not fully “cycle-friendly,” pointing to some districts with more connected cycling lanes and networks, including Sha Tin, Tai Po, Tuen Mun and the developing Kai Tak GreenWay.
It also notes that cycling can be more energy efficient than walking for the same distance, and frames cross district commuting as where cycling would be most beneficial when destinations are too far to reach on foot.
