China signals political summer retreat season at Beidaihe resort
The retreat is linked to the start of the 15th five-year plan and calls on researchers to push for breakthroughs in strategic and cutting-edge technologies.
China has signaled the start of its political elite summer break with announcements of retreats at the seaside resort of Beidaihe, about 300km east of Beijing, according to state news agency Xinhua, as summarized by SCMP Economy.
Xinhua said Cai Qi, described as a senior figure in President Xi Jinping’s circle and the director of the party’s General Office, extended greetings to academics and scientists invited to the resort, including specialists working in basic research, strategic and cutting-edge technologies, core technologies in key fields, and scholars in philosophy and the social sciences.
Cai, who ranks fifth in the Communist Party’s hierarchy and is a member of the Politburo Standing Committee, told the group that “talent” is strategically important for party governance.
He also urged researchers to advance the scientific spirit and strive for breakthroughs, framing the request around the start of China’s 15th five-year plan and the goal of securing decisive progress toward socialist modernization, as reported by SCMP Economy.
