Joby Aviation and Atoms partner to develop U.S. vertiport network

The first phase targets vertiport acquisition and development in Florida, New York, Texas, and California to support Joby's early air taxi operations.

Joby Aviation and industrial infrastructure company Atoms have formed a partnership to develop vertiport sites across the United States, with the first iteration focused on Florida, New York, Texas, and California, the companies said Tuesday.

Atoms plans to develop the vertiports that Joby's electric air taxis would use, with each site designed to include infrastructure for electric aircraft and to function as a transportation hub for autonomous ground vehicles and ride sharing services.

Atoms is led by Travis Kalanick, the billionaire founder of Uber, who said the focus is on building a new asset class to support emerging transportation modes and smart city services.

The push aligns with the Federal Aviation Administration Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Vehicles Integration Pilot Program, which tapped eight agencies across 26 states, and with Joby’s scaling plans that include production facilities in Marina, California, and Dayton, Ohio.
