Bitcoin fell about 40% from Inauguration Day levels, despite policy push
A hypothetical $1,000 BTC investment opened near $102,000 per coin on Jan. 20, 2025 and is shown at about $607 today, while gold over the same period gained about 22%.
A hypothetical $1,000 invested in Bitcoin on Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, 2025, when BTC opened at about $102,000, would have bought roughly 0.0098 BTC, according to TheStreet via Yahoo Finance. With Bitcoin trading near $62,000 at the time of writing, that position is shown at about $607, a loss of 40%.
TheStreet frames the decline as notable given the Trump administration's crypto-facing actions, including signing the GENIUS Act and an executive order establishing a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, which it says was formalized in March 2025 and halted government Bitcoin sales. It argues that, even with that policy tailwind, Bitcoin still fell as a result of broader forces such as a global liquidity squeeze, a hawkish Fed, and unwinds of overleveraged positions.
Over the same period, the outlet says gold gained, with gold trading at about $2,697 per ounce on Jan. 20, 2025. A $1,000 allocation would have bought about 0.371 ounces, and with gold at around $3,300, that stake is shown at about $1,224, up 22%, supported in part by tariff wars, US-Iran military strikes, persistent inflation, and rate pressure that kept gold attracting risk-off flows.
