Indian stocks finish mixed after RBI holds rates steady

The RBI kept the repo rate unchanged for a fourth straight meeting, citing pressure from elevated crude oil and a below-normal monsoon, with headline inflation expected to peak in the third quarter of FY27.

Indian equities ended mixed on August 5, with the Nifty 50 slipping 0.18% to close at 24,570 and the Sensex down 0.09% to 78,501, as weakness in private banking and IT stocks offset gains in metals and autos, LiveMint Markets reported.

Broader market segments outperformed, with the Nifty Midcap 100 rising 0.18% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 gaining 0.76%. Sector buying interest centered on Nifty Metal, Auto, Realty, and Cement, while Media, Private Bank, FMCG, and Pharma finished lower.

The Reserve Bank of India kept the repo rate unchanged for the fourth consecutive policy meeting, choosing to await more data as it assesses the inflation impact of elevated crude oil prices and a below-normal monsoon. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said headline inflation is expected to rise near term and peak in the third quarter of FY27 due largely to food and fuel before easing.

LiveMint Markets also pointed to ongoing uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz, including continued attacks on commercial shipping, even after remarks from US President Donald Trump suggested the waterway could reopen soon. In stock-specific moves, Hindustan Copper led the gainers, rising 8.3% to ₹533, followed by Ola Electric up 7.6% to ₹41.50 after it signed its first memorandum of understanding with Axis Energy for utility-scale energy storage projects.
