Federated Mutual to buy High Definition Vehicle Insurance trucking MGA

Federated Mutual said it has about $15.0 billion in total assets and $6.6 billion in policyholders' surplus, but HDVI has not said whether the acquisition changes its fronting or rating status.

Federated Mutual Insurance Company will acquire High Definition Vehicle Insurance (HDVI), consolidating an MGA that underwrites trucking business and has operated as a full-stack delegated authority platform handling underwriting, policy issuance, and claims, according to Insurance Business.

HDVI has described its products as underwritten by Spinnaker Insurance Company, meaning agencies placing coverage through HDVI have relied on a fronting carrier structure rather than the direct backing of a large, diversified balance sheet. The outlet notes that distinction matters as capacity commitments and partner scrutiny tighten across the MGA market.

Insurance Business also points to updated AM Best outlook language for delegated authority, citing moderate growth, tighter renewal economics, and increased partner scrutiny, with capacity still available but selectivity rising on a partner by partner basis.

HDVI will operate as a largely autonomous subsidiary, and current agency relationships are set to continue without renegotiation, with HDVI CEO Adam Barnett saying clients and agency partners should feel little impact. The article adds that HDVI has not confirmed whether the deal changes its underlying fronting arrangement or rating status, advising agencies not to assume any change in the claims paying structure, while noting Ardea Partners advised HDVI and Gunderson Dettmer Stough Villeneuve Franklin & Hachigia advised the transaction on the other side.
