Newmark faces suit after Boston brokers exit amid power struggle
Brokers Matthew Pullen and Edward Woody Maher Jr. say they left after filing a May lawsuit, with their roles ending July 13, according to an August 3 court filing.
A commercial real estate brokerage power struggle on Newmark’s Boston Capital Markets team has prompted two top producers, Matthew Pullen and Edward Woody Maher Jr., to leave the firm after they filed suit against Newmark and their boss, Rob Griffin, in May, according to a court filing from their attorney dated Aug. 3.
The brokers’ attorney, Ellen Zucker, said in the filing that the two did not resign voluntarily and that Newmark effectively made it impossible for them to do their jobs. Zucker also described the situation as removing them from work they could earn a living from.
The 40-page complaint, first reported by The Boston Globe, includes allegations that Griffin tried to exclude Maher and Pullen from deals and high-profile clients. Newmark did not respond to Bisnow’s request for comment, while Griffin’s attorney, Paul Popeo of Choate, Hall & Stewart LLP, said he will move to dismiss the complaint if it is not withdrawn first.
The dispute also centers on internal leadership changes dating to 2022, when Maher raised concerns about the direction and management of the Boston team. Maher and Pullen were later promoted, and by April 2025 a shared control agreement went into effect, with a succession plan naming Maher as Griffin’s replacement, the filing says.
