CUHK president says student union revival possible via legal registration

Dennis Lo Yuk-ming said the university would require registration under Hong Kong’s Societies Ordinance or Companies Ordinance, pointing to two college unions that have already registered.

The president of the Chinese University of Hong Kong has said the university’s main student union can be revived if it goes through Hong Kong’s legal registration process, according to an interview carried by the South China Morning Post.

Dennis Lo Yuk-ming said the student union would need to register with authorities under either the Societies Ordinance or the Companies Ordinance, and he did not provide a timetable for when the revival could happen.

Lo said that among CUHK’s nine colleges, SH Ho College and Morningside College have already registered, which he presented as evidence that the pathway is available.

He also pushed back on claims that CUHK was overly reliant on student intake from mainland China, saying the university has been making progress on diversification.
