Hong Kong says mega-events drew HK$5.8 billion in visitor spending
Hong Kong’s finance chief said about 1.75 million visitors came to more than 130 events in the first half, with spending averaging HK$3,314 per traveller.
Hong Kong visitors spent HK$5.8 billion, or US$739 million, during major events in the first half of the year, the city’s finance chief said.
In remarks posted on his weekly blog, Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po said the events drew about 1.75 million visitors between January and June, averaging HK$3,314 per traveller, and contributed HK$3.3 billion in economic value added.
Chan attributed the demand boost to art, cultural and mega-events, pointing to retail sales value rising for 14 consecutive months, up 9.6% in the first half.
He cited examples including the Hong Kong Football Festival and the Audi Football Summit, saying the three matches attracted more than 120,000 visitors and generated over HK$180 million in ticket sales, and added that more than 100 events are scheduled for the second half, including the Food Expo and National Day fireworks.
