Shanghai cancels nearly 60% of flights as Typhoon Dolphin nears
Shanghai Airport Group said 1,384 flights were grounded on Sunday, including 871 at Pudong and 513 at Hongqiao, with rail services also temporarily suspended across several provinces.
Typhoon Dolphin is expected to make landfall along the coasts of Zhejiang and Fujian between Sunday night and Monday morning, and Shanghai moved to limit travel as the storm strengthens. The China National Meteorological Centre issued a red alert at 10:00am on Sunday when the typhoon’s center was over the southern East China Sea, about 215 km east of Wenzhou in Zhejiang.
According to SCMP Economy, Shanghai Airport Group announced that nearly 60% of inbound and outbound flights on Sunday would be cancelled. A total of 1,384 flights were grounded, including 871 at Pudong International Airport and 513 at Hongqiao International Airport.
SCMP Economy also reported that Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport said airlines cancelled 270 flights on Sunday, with expected operational impacts starting in the afternoon.
Beyond air travel, the region’s train services were adjusted, with temporary suspensions placed on rail sections across Shanghai and the provinces of Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Anhui, and Jiangxi from Sunday to Monday. The typhoon is projected to move west and northwest, gradually weakening after landfall, while rain and wind are expected to intensify across eastern China.
