China deploys AI fish facial recognition for 24/7 river tracking
The AI system replaces labor intensive manual counts along a dam fishway on Tibet’s Yarlung Tsangpo River, enabling monitoring of ecological changes.
China is using an AI driven fish identification system to track species passing through a fishway on a dam on Tibet’s Yarlung Tsangpo River, Global Times reported via SCMP Economy. The system is used for round the clock monitoring of species unique to the Tibet autonomous region.
Instead of relying on labor intensive manual counts, the project uses an AI based “fish facial recognition” approach to identify aquatic species as they move along the river route.
The report says the middle gorge section of the Yarlung Tsangpo River has shown positive changes in aquatic ecology and animal plant life, according to comments attributed to Yang in the coverage.
The initiative highlights the environmental tradeoffs of hydropower, which can provide flood protection and reliable renewable energy while also posing challenges by restructuring natural water bodies.
