Lightning strike forces China Southern Airbus A321 back at Shenzhen
China Southern said inspections found about 20 strike marks on the aircraft’s underbelly and tail control surfaces after the taxiing incident.
A China Southern Airlines Airbus A321 flight was unable to depart from Shenzhen after the aircraft was struck by lightning while taxiing during a heavy thunderstorm, leading the crew to return to the gate, according to SCMP Economy.
The incident involved flight CZ3209, which was bound for Wuxi in eastern China’s Jiangsu province, as it waited on the ground during strong winds and heavy rain.
A passenger described on social media that the plane shook during the storm and that they felt a lightning bolt strike nearby, the outlet said. No injuries to passengers or crew were reported.
China Southern staff later confirmed the event and said a ground maintenance inspection identified about 20 strike marks on the plane’s underbelly and elevators, the flight control surfaces on the tail, SCMP Economy reported.
