Commanders select Clark, Mortenson, Smoot to build 65,000-seat D.C. stadium
The 1.8M SF project is expected to start in spring 2027 and finish in spring 2030, with $2.7B from the team and $1.1B from D.C. for nearby infrastructure and a sports complex.
The Washington Commanders have selected a joint venture of Clark Construction Group, Mortenson, and Smoot Construction Co. to build their planned 65,000-seat football stadium along the Anacostia River at the RFK campus, according to Bisnow.
The stadium project calls for 1.8M square feet of construction, with preliminary site work already under way since June. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2027, and completion is targeted for spring 2030.
The Commanders said they will invest $2.7B in building the stadium, while the District of Columbia will contribute $1.1B for adjacent infrastructure and a sports complex. The team also noted the wider redevelopment effort tied to the 180-acre RFK campus.
Commanders head of construction Matt Haas said the selection focused on experience, local commitment, and shared vision, and Bisnow reports that Clark and Smoot, along with Hunt Construction, previously worked on Nationals Park. Bisnow also notes D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser characterized the stadium plan as part of transforming 180 acres into a Super Bowl ready site with housing, entertainment, and park space, among other uses.
