Meta creates $1B fund to support AI infrastructure communities
The fund is meant to ensure local communities see benefits such as high paying jobs, investment in schools and public services, and stable energy prices as Meta expands data center capacity.
Meta will launch a new “Future Is For Everyone Fund” with $1 billion dedicated to supporting the communities where it builds AI infrastructure, according to a long letter from CEO Mark Zuckerberg that was shared with the public via Bisnow.
Zuckerberg said sustainable infrastructure development requires communities to benefit from each project, including high paying local jobs, investment in schools and public services, keeping energy prices from rising, and protecting the environment, Bisnow reported.
The outlet also noted that Meta cited historical precedents where towns benefited from innovation like railroads, electrification and broadband, and argued that communities it invests in over the long term may be more supportive than areas where speculators build with limited local investment.
Bisnow said the announcement comes as public opinion toward new AI related data centers has soured, citing a May Gallup poll that found 7 in 10 Americans opposed constructing AI data centers in their area, and added that the $1 billion fund is small compared with Meta’s projected $145 billion in capital expenditures in 2026, much of which is tied to AI infrastructure.
