REIT sustainability data is being embedded into investment decisions

A Nareit webinar ahead of its REIT Industry Sustainability Report 2026 said 96% of equity REITs in the FTSE Nareit All Equity REITs Index publish standalone sustainability reports.

Sustainability is increasingly being built into core business strategy as REITs use sustainability data to guide investment decisions, manage risk, and target long-term value, panelists said during Nareit’s July 21 webinar, “Sustainability & Strategy: What REITs Are Doing in 2026.” The discussion followed the release of Nareit’s REIT Industry Sustainability Report 2026, which analyzes reporting and practices among the sector’s largest REITs.

Moderated by Nareit SVP Jessica Long, the webinar featured leaders from Host Hotels & Resorts, Prologis, Tanger, and Empire State Realty Trust, focusing on how companies are translating sustainability priorities into operational and capital planning. Nareit said sustainability reporting has become standard across the industry, with 96% of equity REITs in the FTSE Nareit All Equity REITs Index publishing standalone sustainability reports.

Nareit’s report also adds sector-level analysis, describing how sustainability priorities can vary by property type while still aligning with a common goal of creating value and managing risk. Panelists said investor questions increasingly focus on not only sustainability targets, but also the plan for achieving them, and how the data connects to existing decision-making processes.

Prologis’ Suzanne Fallender said investor discussions often center on the company’s net-zero commitment and the data used to support its strategy, including measurement, energy efficiency, electrification, and renewable energy. Empire State Realty Trust’s Dana Schneider added that accurate, verified data is needed to show project performance, support capital allocation, and communicate results to investors and boards, with sustainability-related inputs tied to ROI, according to remarks on the webinar.
