Safeway store closures continue as Albertsons shifts footprint

Safeway cited the end of a lease and a decision to reinvest in other existing stores as it closed a Newport, Oregon location in July.

Safeway is shutting additional stores as its parent company, Albertsons, continues a strategic shift in its store footprint, according to Yahoo Finance.

The outlet reports that Safeway’s most recent closure was in Newport, Oregon, a location at 2220 N Coast Hwy that served locals for 30 years before closing in July.

Yahoo Finance also notes other Safeway closures, including a Hechinger Mall location in Washington, D.C., that shuttered on May 16 after operating for 40 years, and a Hayward Safeway in California’s Bay Area that closed in February 2026.

In a statement about the Washington closure, Safeway said it was evaluating its store footprint and real estate portfolio, including decisions tied to reaching the end of its lease for a given location and reinvesting resources into other existing stores.
