TikTok orders U.S. employees back to office five days a week
The ByteDance-owned company told some hybrid teams in the U.S. to expect a full office return in 2026, after earlier office-return policies began across the tech sector.
TikTok is ending its U.S. work-from-home era, instructing employees to return to the office five days a week, according to Commercial Observer, citing sources familiar with the matter.
The change affects hybrid employees who were previously allowed to work from home at least one day per week. TikTok also notified employees across multiple large divisions in December to expect a full office return in 2026, the outlet reported, while some teams such as TikTok’s e-commerce division returned to five-day attendance more than a year ago.
TikTok employs thousands of U.S. workers across dozens of metro locations, including its Culver City headquarters near Los Angeles and office space in Manhattan’s Times Square. The company also recently announced the closure of its 250-person Nashville office, just two years after opening it, Commercial Observer noted.
The article ties TikTok’s shift to a broader return-to-office push. Commercial Observer said U.S. office visits rose 6 percent year-over-year in the first half of 2026, reaching the narrowest first-half gap from pre-pandemic levels so far, and that the return-to-office wave has supported office leasing and helped drive rents higher in New York this year.
