McDonald’s Hong Kong suspends Ebi Burger after Taiwan finds residues
The Taiwan operator said the shrimp patties contained 0.7 ppb of nitrofurans and did not comply with food safety regulations, prompting refunds for customers who bought the items on Wednesday and Thursday.
McDonald’s has temporarily pulled its Ebi Burger series from menus in Hong Kong as a precautionary measure following a similar suspension in Taiwan over food safety concerns, the South China Morning Post reports.
Taiwan McDonald’s said it suspended sales of “Ebi Burger” and “Double Ebi Burger” after an importer notified it the night before that random batch testing found 0.7 ppb of nitrofurans and their chemical residues on shrimp patties used in the products.
The Taiwan operator said the shrimp patties came from a different production batch, apologized to customers, and said it would refund people who purchased the items on Wednesday and Thursday.
In Hong Kong, McDonald’s app listings showed “Ebi Burger,” “Double Ebi Burger,” and “Ebi Burger with Pineapple” as currently unavailable, while the Hong Kong operator said it removed the items to address potential public concern.
