SMIC weighs adding equipment as mature-node chip demand outpaces plans

SMIC said future wafer starts are exceeding its earlier expectations, prompting potential additional equipment installs at existing sites and demand strength through at least 2027 for certain power-management products.

Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. is considering adding capacity at existing sites after demand for mature-node chips used alongside AI processors rose beyond earlier expectations, the company said on an earnings call, according to SCMP Economy.

SMIC co-CEO Zhao Haijun said future wafer starts are far exceeding prior expectations and that the company is adjusting its expansion plans, potentially installing additional equipment where space is available, with further details due in upcoming announcements or briefings.

The company said demand is strongest for support chips used in AI servers and data centers, including logic chips, power-management products, and optical module components.

SCMP Economy reports that orders for BCD power-management products were visible through the end of 2027.
