HGA completes 620,000-SF surgical center addition at Abbott Northwestern

The $1 billion, 10-story tower adds 190 private inpatient rooms and 30 advanced operating rooms for complex procedures.

Interdisciplinary design firm HGA has completed the Richard M. Schulze Surgical and Critical Care Center, a 10-story, 620,000-square-foot addition to Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, according to ConnectCRE.

The project adds 190 private inpatient rooms and integrates new critical care spaces for complex procedures, including 30 advanced operating rooms purpose-built for such work.

ConnectCRE also reports the new tower is part of a broader campus revitalization effort at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, including upgrades to the historic Founder’s Mall into an arrival garden and a 27,000-square-foot rooftop garden with city views.

HGA served as architect, with Mortenson as construction manager, and HGA principal Jennifer Klund said the design balances expanded specialized service access with flexibility for future technologies, clinical needs, and healthcare delivery models.
