Streaming site suspends Chainsmoker Cat in Hong Kong over smoking ads
Hong Kong’s Department of Health said the show violated the city’s ban on online smoking product advertisements under the Smoking (Public Health) Ordinance.
A Taiwan-based streaming platform has suspended broadcast of the Japanese anime series Chainsmoker Cat for Hong Kong audiences, citing a conflict with Hong Kong rules on online smoking ads, according to the SCMP Economy.
Animation Crazy, launched by Bahamut, said it received a letter from Hong Kong’s Department of Health and that the program contravenes regulations prohibiting the advertising of smoking products on the internet under the Smoking (Public Health) Ordinance.
The platform said it would immediately suspend the show in the Hong Kong region to comply with local requirements.
Under the ordinance, offenders face a HK$50,000 (US$6,370) fine on summary conviction, and an additional HK$1,500 fine for each day the offense continues, SCMP Economy reported.
