Brent rises above $91 after projectile hits vessel near Strait of Hormuz
The UKMTO said the impact damaged the engine room, caused a crew casualty, and no environmental impact has been reported so far.
Brent crude pushed above $91 per barrel after a cargo vessel was struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns about further escalation in the region, according to OilPrice.
The UKMTO, a Royal Navy-sponsored organization, said it received a report of an incident during an outbound transit, adding that the impact damaged the engine room and resulted in a crew casualty, with the remaining crew being assisted by the Omani Coast Guard, and no environmental impact reported at present.
The incident occurred near Omani shores in a southern outbound corridor used to move from the Persian Gulf into the Gulf of Oman, in the context of heightened security worries around control of one of the world’s most important shipping lanes for oil and LNG.
OilPrice also noted that the move helped lift Brent in early Asian trade, while WTI crude topped $85 per barrel during the same session.
