Institutions increased MSTR holdings by about $695 million in Q2
Strategy said additions by 12 of its 15 biggest institutional holders netted roughly $695 million, even as MSTR swung from a near-$195 rally to a June close of $86.93.
Wall Street institutions boosted their exposure to MicroStrategy, as Strategy disclosed that 12 of its 15 largest institutional shareholders increased their MSTR positions through June 30. In the company’s update dated Aug. 18, Strategy said the combined additions totaled $1.2 billion.
Strategy’s own breakdown shows the 12 buyers added about $1.3 billion, while three firms reduced positions by roughly $609 million, leaving a net increase of about $695 million across the top 15 holders. Goldman Sachs, Capital International Investors, and two BlackRock-related firms were among the named contributors, with Goldman reporting the largest increase.
The timing landed during a volatile period for the stock. Strategy’s chart shows MSTR rallied toward $195 before reversing sharply and ending June at $86.93.
The institutional buying also intersects with Strategy’s shift in how it finances Bitcoin purchases. During Q2, institutions increased stakes while MSTR still functioned mainly as a corporate Bitcoin accumulation engine, but Strategy later leaned more on its preferred stock, STRC, after MSTR’s premium to underlying Bitcoin holdings narrowed and STRC fell below $80.
Strategy responded by raising STRC’s annual dividend from 9% to 12%, switching to twice-monthly payments and building a larger dollar reserve, according to the report. CryptoSlate also noted that some purchases may reflect passive or index-linked flows tied to products managed by large asset managers rather than a fresh, discretionary bet on Strategy.
