Chinese platforms embed foundation models into everyday business tools
One company behind fashion and travel recommendations says its Dots3-Note Preview model uses 280 billion parameters and is positioned against OpenAI and Anthropic systems on certain benchmarks.
While global attention has focused on China’s newer “AI tigers,” a separate wave of domestic technology firms is building in-house artificial intelligence systems tailored to their own consumer platforms, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet describes efforts beyond standalone AI labs such as DeepSeek, Z.ai, Moonshot AI and MiniMax, pointing instead to platforms spanning e-commerce, video gaming, social media and travel that are developing foundation models for their business ecosystems.
SCMP Economy reports that Dots Studio, the AI research arm of a platform known for fashion, travel and shopping recommendations, introduced Dots3-Note Preview, a 280 billion parameter open-weight model.
In a blog post, Dots Studio said benchmark tests showed the model matched or outperformed systems from US labs OpenAI and Anthropic and also compared favorably with domestic leaders DeepSeek and Z.ai on specific tasks, reflecting a wider shift toward custom AI across China’s technology sector.
