Bitcoin surged toward $80,000 after U.S. debt buyback plans

The jump followed Treasury plans to raise long term debt buybacks to at least $4 billion from $2 billion, a move tied in the article to falling bond yields.

Bitcoin jumped to nearly $80,000 after Treasury plans were described as aiming to double long term debt buybacks from $2 billion to at least $4 billion, according to Yahoo Finance.

The article says the broader crypto market also followed, as Bitcoin rebounded from early February 2026 lows after nearly 200 days of trading in a sideways range, after dropping about 52% from late 2025 highs near $130,000 to about $59,800.

It attributes part of the initial downside and the subsequent rebound to a link between U.S. bond yields and risk appetite, noting that after Treasury intervention, yields fell from 19 year highs for about two days before moving back toward prior levels by Friday.

Yahoo Finance also cites Bloomberg in saying additional short positions of about $2.74 billion may have contributed to the rally, while warning that if yields rise again or liquidity tightens, the price move could fade.
