China’s anti-corruption drive punished record numbers of officials in 2025

South China Morning Post analysis says 983,000 people were disciplined last year, and senior officials punished were three times the 2013 level.

The South China Morning Post has launched a data project examining how President Xi Jinping’s anti-graft campaign became a central policy priority for the Chinese Communist Party.

In the early years of Xi’s first term, authorities sought to reassure the public the campaign would not be temporary, after graft investigators began taking down senior officials in ways that raised eyebrows, and party leaders warned local governments against reverting to short-lived “movement-style” crackdowns.

A decade later, the outlet says the campaign has expanded, citing a new analysis that finds last year’s punishments reached 983,000 people, ranging from mild warnings to investigations and criminal prosecution.

The report also states that senior officials taken down last year totaled three times the number in 2013, with the fallout now including alleged new forms of graft, such as cryptocurrency-related schemes and the use of clandestine proxies.
