Hong Kong public schools cut a record 126 Primary One classes

The total number of Primary One classes across public schools is set to fall from 1,558 in 2025-26 to 1,432 in 2026-27.

Hong Kong public schools will cut a record 126 Primary One classes for the 2026-27 academic year as student numbers shrink, according to Primary School Profiles cited by the South China Morning Post.

The profiles show the total Primary One class count across public schools will drop from 1,558 in 2025-26 to 1,432 in 2026-27, a net decrease of 8.0%.

The reduction is not uniform across the city, with Kwai Tsing hit hardest, where nearly half of the district’s 31 primary schools, 14 campuses, trimmed their Primary One intake.

Other districts also saw cutbacks, with Tuen Mun and Eastern each losing 13 classes, and the profiles covering more than 500 local primary institutions compiled to help parents choose schools.
