2026 World Cup boosts dining and retail only near host venues

In the 11 U.S. host cities, dining visits rose 53.7% and retail traffic climbed 22% year over year within close proximity, while broader metro-area gains were minimal.

ConnectCRE, citing a Colliers and Placer.ai report, said the 2026 FIFA World Cup produced a localized lift in retail and dining visitation across the 11 U.S. host cities. Near match venues, dining visits increased 53.7% and retail traffic rose 22% year over year, while gains across larger metro areas were minimal.

The report found sporting goods stores were among the most consistent winners during the 39-day tournament, while apparel stores and superstores saw mixed outcomes. Bars and pubs averaged a 9% increase in visits on match days.

Colliers national director of retail services and practice groups Anjee Solanki said mega-events can create major consumer demand, but being nearby alone does not ensure businesses capture it. According to the report, the strongest performing properties tied the impact to the fan experience through tenant mix, gathering spaces, or activations.
