Corn slips modestly on month-end as futures hold recent gains

Month-end positioning and new CFTC data showed managed money added 126,008 contracts to its net long as of August 25.

Corn futures started the final trading day of August with modest weakness, as the market paused after last week’s rally. The cash Corn price based on the CmdtyView national average was up 2 1/4 cents to $4.84 1/4, while corn futures settled 1 to 4 cents higher at the close on Friday, keeping September’s weekly gain in place.

September corn last week added 28 1/4 cents, and December 28 increased cents. Open interest rose by 35,585 contracts on Friday, and 90 deliveries were issued against September corn on the first notice day, according to the report.

Friday’s CFTC data indicated managed money in corn futures and options added a total of 126,008 contracts to its net long as of August 25. That brought the net long to 376,513 contracts, the largest since April 2022, though it remained more than 52,000 contracts below the Tuesday record going back to 2006, with total outright longs also hitting a record at 465,500 contracts by Tuesday.

On the supply and demand side, the report cited export sales commitments for 2025/26 at 87.758 MMT, equal to 102% of the USDA export projection and in line with last year’s sale pace, with the marketing year ending on Monday. It also noted accumulated sales for 2026/27 new crop at 12.458 MMT, down 33.6% year over year but still the fourth largest for the current week over a 30-year lookback, alongside Brazilian crop estimates showing 2026/27 production at 145.6 MMT. Yahoo Finance relayed the analysis originally published on Barchart.com.
