Cotton futures rise, supported by growing managed-money longs

Export data shows the 2026/27 cotton export commitment at 4.332 million RB, up 27% year over year.

Cotton is trading higher Monday morning, up 168 to 207 points, as ICE cotton futures weathered Friday’s broad losses of 19 to 114 points across the board. Despite the choppy week, December futures were still holding a weekly gain of 303 points, while crude oil was down 9 cents per barrel and the US dollar index was up by $0.533.

Barchart data cited by Yahoo Finance shows managed money extended its positioning, adding 17,173 contracts to its net long in cotton futures and options for the week ending August 25. That left the managed money net long at 95,841 contracts on Tuesday.

On the demand side, Export Sales data places the 2026/27 cotton export commitment level at 4.332 million RB, up 27% from a year ago. The same figures show it is 38% of USDA’s export projection, ahead of the 30% pace seen last year, though behind the 5-year average.

Additional market details include The Seam reported sales of 2,212 bales on Thursday at an average price of 87.19 cents per lb. The Cotlook A Index rose 70 points on August 27 to 98.30 cents, ICE certified cotton stocks were unchanged at 66,327 bales, and the Adjusted World Price was raised by another 190 points to 71.52 cents per lb.
