Glacier collapse triggers high-speed mudslide hitting Gyirong Port

The mudslide reached Gyirong Port on the Chinese side about seven minutes after a glacier section collapsed in Nepal at more than 5,000 meters.

According to SCMP Economy, a section of glacier collapsed on the Nepalese side of the Himalayas on August 26, at an altitude of more than 5,000 metres.

The falling ice and rock reportedly accelerated down a steep valley at about 50 metres per second, scouring debris and transforming into a high-speed mudslide.

SCMP Economy said the mudslide struck Gyirong Port on the Chinese side about seven minutes later, with the force of the flow largely burying and obliterating much of the area impacted.
