Spot bitcoin ETFs still down about $1 billion year to date
After an $3.52 billion surge in August, net flows stayed negative for 2026 as June withdrawals totaled $4.51 billion.
CoinDesk reports that investor demand for U.S.-listed spot bitcoin ETFs has rebounded in recent weeks, but net flows for 2026 remain in the red by roughly $1 billion year to date, based on SoSoValue data.
The newsletter says a strong August added $3.52 billion in fresh capital, followed by $770.15 million so far in September. It points to May and June as the main drivers of the deficit, with June alone seeing institutional capital withdraw $4.51 billion, wiping out gains from March and April.
Analysts at crypto exchange Bitfinex, writing to CoinDesk, said the key test is whether inflows can persist through this week’s U.S. CPI release and a Treasury buyback. They added that continued buying alongside elevated short term yields would suggest the policy rate is no longer the binding constraint on bitcoin.
CoinDesk also flagged macro cross currents, noting oil prices are up 10% this month and that Nymex WTI futures hit a three month high above $94 earlier today. It said the price rise has recently stalled around the $2,500 to $2,550 range, with buyers not yet pushing through that level.
