South Philadelphia arena plans unveiled for Sixers, Flyers and new WNBA team
Construction is slated to start next year, with the fully privately funded project opening in 2030, according to the arena plans.
Philadelphia’s Sixers and Flyers, along with a new still-unnamed WNBA team, unveiled preview renderings for a new arena at the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, with an expected opening in 2030. The venue is designed to be home to the NBA’s 76ers and the NHL’s Flyers, plus the new WNBA franchise.
The project, developed by design firm Populous and architect Moody Nolan, calls for three stacked cantilevered bands and wide pedestrian plazas for fans to gather before and after events. Comcast will own the naming rights, with the final moniker to be announced later.
The arena will replace the Xfinity Mobile Arena, which underwent a $400M renovation completed in 2024. Organizers said the new facility will be completely privately funded, citing how public contributions to stadium construction have become increasingly politically charged nationwide.
Construction is scheduled to begin next year and wrap by 2030, though the plan still requires legislative and regulatory approval from city officials. The sources note that Philadelphia City Council President Kenyatta Johnson is referenced multiple times in related press materials, and that city social media accounts shared the renderings with a positive message.
