Hong Kong exports jump 53% in August to HK$667.9 billion
Imports rose 60% to HK$739.1 billion, widening the August trade deficit to HK$71.2 billion, or 9.6% of import value.
Hong Kong’s exports extended their recent strength into August, rising 53.0% to HK$667.9 billion, according to provisional figures from the Census and Statistics Department reported by SCMP Economy.
The outlet said the increase followed a 50.7% surge in July, with August exports the second-highest on record after July’s all-time peak of HK$672.51 billion.
SCMP Economy added that imports climbed 60.0% to HK$739.1 billion, leaving a trade deficit of HK$71.2 billion, equivalent to 9.6% of the August value of goods imports. It also attributed the export demand in part to strong interest in artificial intelligence-related products.
The export growth also came after July’s peak, with August sustaining the high levels seen earlier in the year.
