Heathrow Express faces uncertainty as Heathrow’s third runway plan advances

Guardian Business reports the Heathrow Express is used by 4.5 million passengers per year, a figure the outlet says represents at best less than 6% of Heathrow’s air passengers.

The outlet links the rail service’s outlook to Heathrow’s £33 billion expansion plan, which it says would bring 100,000 to 200,000 more passengers to or from the airport each day.

Guardian Business also highlights that the runway project involves moving part of the M25 motorway to make room for a new 2.2-mile, or 3.5 km, runway, and notes that accommodating the added passengers and staff could further strain ground transport.

The outlet says the need to move more travelers in more sustainable ways could become a thornier challenge as the additional airport traffic is expected to increase.
