Heathrow warns third runway could slip by four years

The runway project is estimated to cost £33bn, with Heathrow saying it needs planning approval by 2029 and aims to build within a decade of that approval.

Heathrow Airport has warned that its planned third runway could be delayed by up to four years, citing planning and regulatory issues, according to BBC Business.

The airport said the UK government had hoped the new runway, estimated at £33bn, would open by 2035, but it now views that deadline as increasingly difficult without changes to simplify the planning process.

Heathrow said it is aiming to secure planning permission by 2029 and then open the runway within a decade after approval, describing its core scenario as opening a new runway within that window.

The Department for Transport said the project timeline had “always been ambitious” and that it will work with stakeholders “at pace,” while Heathrow said it is encouraged by efforts to streamline infrastructure and remove regulatory bottlenecks.
