China issues guidelines for higher education reform

China has unveiled guidelines to overhaul its university system, urging higher education institutions to take on more distinct roles as demographic change, a tighter job market, and industrial upgrading reshape the country’s skills needs.

The reform plan was issued jointly by the general offices of the ruling Communist Party’s Central Committee and China’s State Council, according to state news agency Xinhua.

Xinhua reported the guidelines on September 20, with an emphasis on adjusting higher education to evolving labor and industry demands.
