Amazon and GoodRx push flat-fee prescription plans for insured workers
Marsh projects total health benefit cost per employee will rise 8.2% on average in 2027, and 11% if employers make no plan changes.
Insurance Business reports that Amazon’s RxPass and GoodRx’s Companion plan are being marketed as flat-fee, cash-pay prescription add-ons for workers who already have health coverage. Amazon launched RxPass in January 2023 as a $5 monthly add-on for Prime members, later opening it to Prime members on Medicare and expanding it to 48 states.
GoodRx’s Companion plan, launched in May, costs $14.99 per month and includes more than 200 common generics at no charge, hundreds more for under $10, $19 telehealth visits, and discounts on services including dental, vision, lab and imaging. The outlet notes these purchases typically sit outside an employer group plan, which can affect deductibles, claims data, and renewal dynamics.
Insurance Business says the companies describe their products as add-ons to insurance while, in practice, they compete with the pharmacy benefit on price. It also cites competition from Mark Cuban’s Cost Plus Drugs and other smaller companies as employer plans move into an expensive renewal season.
