China’s generative AI users surpass 700 million, topping half the population

China’s generative AI user base rose 16.0% from the end of 2025, when there were 602.0 million users and a 42.8% penetration rate, according to a CINIC release.

China’s generative AI user base surpassed 700 million at the end of June, accounting for more than half of the population as AI adoption reached a record penetration rate in the country, according to data released by the China Internet Network Information Centre.

The report said the user base increased 16.0% from the end of 2025, when China had 602.0 million generative AI users and a 42.8% penetration rate.

Question-and-answer services were described as the most common use of generative AI in China, with 76.0% of users saying they used the technology to seek answers.

CINIC also found that 48.0% used AI tools to process images or videos, 38.0% used it for text processing, and 33.0% used it for work summaries, meeting notes, or presentations, while 39.0% of users reported buying smart hardware online over the prior six months, the SCMP Economy reported.
