CRMLS rejects Compass demands and prepares legal fight over MLS rules

The California Regional Multiple Listing Service said it is preparing for possible litigation and has launched an MLS Cooperation Legal Defense Fund after receiving Compass’s Sept. 8 demand letter.

HousingWire reports that California Regional Multiple Listing Service, or CRMLS, has rejected Compass International Holdings’ Sept. 8 demand letter challenging rules tied to public marketing and MLS cooperation.

CRMLS said it is preparing for possible litigation and forming an MLS Cooperation Legal Defense Fund, according to the organization.

In an open letter and related correspondence cited by HousingWire, CRMLS characterized Compass’s position as one that would allow the brokerage to benefit from cooperative information sharing while still publicly marketing properties and withholding those homes from other cooperative participants.

CRMLS also said it views the model as free riding that could undermine the MLS system, the outlet reported.
