Ken Griffin donates $3B to Carnegie Mellon for Miami campus
The planned 35-acre Wynwood campus is set to begin construction next year, with the first students expected in 2028.
Billionaire Ken Griffin is donating $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University, including $2 billion earmarked to build a new campus in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood, Commercial Observer reports.
The gift also includes $1 billion for Carnegie Mellon’s Pittsburgh campus, and Griffin is joining the university’s board of trustees, according to the announcement.
Carnegie Mellon said the Miami campus will cover 35 acres and will focus on computer science, artificial intelligence, robotics and other technology fields, with plans to support more than 3,500 students, nearly 300 faculty members and more than 600 staff.
The university said construction is scheduled to begin next year, with the first students expected in 2028, and it acquired the Wynwood site from Miami developer Moishe Mana for an undisclosed price, Bisnow reports.
