Hong Kong to pilot higher-paid carers with advanced training
The plan would pay eligible carers 10% to 20% more than typical domestic helper salaries, with a current domestic worker minimum wage of HK$5,100 per month.
Hong Kong will launch a pilot scheme to allow the importation of specially qualified carers to support elderly residents living at home, as outlined in Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu’s policy address, according to SCMP Economy.
The report says the program targets domestic helpers who hold a suitable certificate of expertise and have three years of relevant experience, and that they would be paid 10% to 20% more than the normal helper salary.
SCMP Economy reports that the current minimum wage for domestic workers is HK$5,100, equivalent to about US$650 per month, and that the government plans to strengthen support for carers as part of the initiative.
Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun Yuk-han elaborated on the scheme in a subsequent press briefing, the outlet said.
