US conducts non-nuclear underground test to improve detection of low-yield blasts

The experiment at Nevada National Security Site collected data to validate detection models and refine algorithms tied to low-yield nuclear explosion monitoring.

The US Department of Energy said its National Nuclear Security Administration conducted a subsurface, non-nuclear chemical high-explosive experiment at the Nevada National Security Site.

The test did not involve any nuclear explosions, but it was intended to increase the United States ability to detect low-yield nuclear explosions.

According to SCMP Economy, Washington linked the work to a suspected low-yield nuclear test by China in 2020, an accusation Beijing denies.

The Department of Energy said the experiment collected data to validate scientific models and refine algorithms used in US nuclear explosion detection capabilities.
