China’s regulator says most online microdramas are AI-generated

The National Radio and Television Administration said more than 90% of the 430,000 microdramas released online in the first eight months of the year were AI-generated.

Two decades after stepping away from the spotlight, Hong Kong actress Joey Wong returned in an artificial intelligence reconstructed video released by NetEase, with recreated scenes from roles including A Chinese Ghost Story and Green Snake.

The development reflects how quickly AI is reshaping China’s microdrama pipeline, with China’s broadcasting regulator, the National Radio and Television Administration, reporting that more than 90% of microdramas launched online in the first eight months of the year were AI-generated.

According to the regulator, 430,000 microdramas were launched online over that period, with AI-generated titles accounting for the vast majority of volume.
