Japan adds legal safeguards against sex harassment in recruitment

According to SCMP Economy, final-year students in Japan have long faced skewed recruitment power dynamics, including invitations to recruiters’ apartments for application help and coffee dates with alumni.

The outlet also describes inappropriate interview questions about candidates’ relationships, marriage plans, and sex lives, noting that before Thursday there had been no official legal safeguards to protect jobseekers from such harassment.

Campaigners and advocates welcomed the change but said it may still lack enforcement strength and arrived years too late, even as societal attitudes may have shifted.
