Japan expects rice to regain market share in 2026-27

Japan’s rice production is forecast to rise to 7.37 million tonnes, and higher rice supplies could weigh on feed corn and wheat demand.

Japan’s rice market is set to expand again as rice prices are projected to fall from historical highs, allowing rice to reclaim market share from wheat in marketing year 2026-27, according to a report from the Foreign Agricultural Service at the US Department of Agriculture, cited by World Grain.

The USDA’s FAS expects Japan’s rice production to rebound from the 2024-25 slump, with production forecast to increase year on year by about 100,000 tonnes to 7.37 million tonnes, driven mainly by growth in non-table rice production.

With domestic supplies stabilized, Japan is expected to import only the minimum market access volume of rice, the report said, while rice stock management decisions for 2026-27, particularly around excess private table rice stocks and replenishing government reserves, could influence the feed market.

The FAS also projected rice consumption in Japan to rise by 7% from 2025-26 to 7.9 million tonnes, and said that increases in rice supplies may reduce consumption of feed corn and wheat.
