Washington lawmakers tour Tri-Cities housing cost barriers
The October 1 tour highlighted issues including high fees, lengthy permitting, and local regulatory red tape, as Washington plans for a projected need of 1.1 million additional homes by 2044.
HousingWire reports Washington state officials and more than 50 legislators, officials and stakeholders took a six-stop housing policy tour of the Tri-Cities region on Oct. 1 to see firsthand how fees, permitting delays and local regulatory hurdles affect housing supply.
The visit positioned the Tri-Cities as a case study for the state, home to more than 300,000 people, while Washington faces a projected need for 1.1 million additional homes by 2044.
According to HousingWire, leaders from local homebuilding and economic development organizations hosted Lt. Gov. Denny Heck and the group, with the tour focused on real-world barriers to expanding supply.
On the trip, lawmakers examined how the costs of building homes and the impact of “red tape” can add to overall housing prices, with organizers saying residents and stakeholders experience those issues directly.
