Employers show growing interest in pooled retirement plan structures
New Transamerica Institute research finds 48% of employers without a standalone retirement plan would consider pooled employer or defined contribution group options, while 4 in 10 private-sector workers at firms with fewer than 100 employees lack access to workplace retirement plans.
Nearly half of employers that do not currently sponsor a standalone retirement plan say they would consider joining a pooled employer plan, multiple employer plan, or defined contribution group, according to the Transamerica Institute, a nonprofit affiliated with Transamerica.
The finding, from the Institute's May 2026 Employers, Workers, and the New World of Work report, is tied to coverage gaps highlighted by US Bureau of Labor Statistics data. The BLS says four in 10 private-sector employees at businesses with fewer than 100 workers have no access to a workplace retirement plan.
Insurance Business reports that major US insurance brokerages have started expanding into retirement and wealth advisory for small and midsize employer clients, adding retirement plan consulting to existing health, disability, and life relationships.
The report frames employer openness to pooled retirement structures as a live issue given the access shortfall among smaller firms, rather than a theoretical market shift.
